Back Pain

| All, Back pain

Back pain. It is estimated it affects up to 80% of Americans at some point in their lifetime, in fact, the top 3 reasons Americans visit their local doctors include osteoarthritis and joint disorders (33.6%), back problems (23.9%) equating for well over 50% of doctor’s visits across America according to https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

The prevention and even in many cases the cure for back pain in supposedly unknown.

There in many cases can be a straightforward process to helping Back Pain, regardless of the time the patient has suffered with the condition. The prevention of back pain, even more straightforward.

So why is this simple process overlooked, and why to this day is the cause and cure for back pain still a mystery?

The health industry can at times over specialise offering vast and mixed opinions. To be at the pinnacle of your career, to earn the highest salary a doctor or practitioner must home in and focus on just one tiny aspect of the human body. And this can at times create problems and differing opinions with back specialists, doctors and practitioners who look up to and value their opinion on back pain. They can focus so much on the structures and pathology of the lower back, they can completely blindsight themselves to the rest of the human body and the role it plays in back pain.

Chronic back pain in a lot of cases can be linked to muscular imbalances throughout the body. If major postural muscles that are designed to support the lower back are extremely weak, then the lower back becomes overloaded and its structures compromised.  Over time wear and tear will occur to the spine and its intervertebral discs, nerves may be interfered throughout the process. However, a high percentage of back pain cases can be linked to muscular, tendons, joints, or fascia related. Not just the one the diagnosis showing up on the scans. In fact, what was the underlying cause of the dysfunction in the first place? Unless there is massive blunt force or trauma, discs don’t just bulge for no reason, or develop arthritis for no reason – there is always an underlying cause.

Muscular spasms occur as a protective mechanism or forced rest for a lower back that is completely exhausted due to supporting the load and function in the absence of sufficient postural muscle strength.

Back pain can be caused by weakness. What should be the largest muscle in the human body, the gluteus maximus, the chief anti gravitant muscle (that supports us in an upright position) in chronic back pain sufferers it is atrophied (weak and or wasted away). This weakness leads to overdominance of anterior muscles, which pulls the body forward of its biomechanical or postural midline. This negates the posterior muscles (gluteus maximus being one of them) from carrying out their designed function. It not only compromises the lower back, however this pattern of over dominant anterior muscles and weakened/ atrophied posterior muscles creates a perpetual cycle of chronic back pain.
